We always love watching our backyard birds return after the winter months as they are a welcome sign of spring and warmer days ahead.

There are lots of ways to give our feathered friends a little love and in spring we enjoy making bird nesting balls and homemade birdseed ornaments to say “welcome back home!”

These peanut butter bird feeders are a great nature craft for late winter and early spring when birds need the most help finding food.

Pinecone bird feeders are one of the easiest homemade bird feeders to make and are a great project for little hands.

My 3 and 5 year old enjoyed the process from start to finish with minimal help from me. They were so proud of their bird feeders and excited to watch the birds (and squirrels!) enjoy the treat they made for them!

Supplies

  • Pinecones
  • Peanut butter – I used a natural peanut butter that was just ground peanuts.  Peanut butter is a good high-protein treat for birds.
  • Birdseed
  • Knife, popsicle stick or spoon

How to Make a Pinecone Bird Feeder Craft for Kids

1.) Gather Supplies

Place your peanut butter and bird seed in separate small bowls.  Tie the twine on the top of the pinecone.  Make sure your length of string is big enough to fit over a tree branch.

2) “Paint” Your Pinecone with Peanut Butter

There are two methods here:

Method one – Use a butter knife or popsicle stick to paint a dab of peanut butter on each little opening of the pinecone.  This is very nice and neat and creates a cute peanut butter pine cone bird feeder. My five year old liked “painting” her pinecone this way!

Method 2 – Slather the peanut butter all over the pinecone by either using a spoon or rolling it in the peanut butter. You may not be able to tell it is a pinecone at the end if you choose this route, but it sure is fun! This way does get a little messy, so It was helpful to have a paper towel nearby to clean off hands in between pinecones!

3) Dip in Birdseed

Once your pinecone is generously covered in peanut butter roll in the birdseed mixture.  Place on a paper plate until your other pinecones are ready.

4) Hang up Outside

Hang your finished pinecone bird feeder on a tree branch and wait for the wild birds to enjoy their tasty treat!

These homemade bird feeders are an easy craft for kids of all ages.  They are a great way to introduce your kids to the different kinds of birds in your area and learn about migration as well!  We had so much fun making them and looking out the window every day to see if any birds were enjoying their treats!
