10 Whimsical Read Alouds to Spark Imagination

These whimsical books are full of beautiful illustrations, heart warming stories and nature inspired tales that will soon become your families favorites. The rich imagery is sure to spark your child's imagination and leave them dreaming of little worlds full of fairies and forest friends.

All of these books are full of stories that feel like a warm hug and are great for younger children as well as captivating for an older elementary aged child. I read them aloud to my 5 and 7 year old and they are some of our very favorites!

Many of these books are part of larger collections and are fun to own in your home library if you can because of how often you will want to read them.

There is a mix of short stories, picture books and beginner chapter books in this list, but all are great read alouds for children preschool age and up!

My Father's Dragon by Ruth Gannett

Grade Reading Level: 1-4

Grade Reading Level: Preschool - 2

Peter Rabbit was one of the first books my daughter latched onto when she was around 3 and ever since then we've loved all of Beatrix Potter's classic books. The whole collection from Jemima Puddle-Duck to Benjamin Bunny and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle bring a charming world of woodland creatures to life. Her delicate illustrations and timeless tales make these books feel like little pieces of childhood magic.

Grade Reading Level: 4-6

Elsa Beskow is known as "Sweden's Beatrix Potter". Her enchanting books are filled with woodland fairies, toadstool children, magical forests, and many nature themed settings. Her beautifully detailed illustrations and creative stories capture the wonder of childhood and will soon become a new family favorite!

Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne

Grade Reading Level: 2nd and up

Mouse's Wood by Alice Melvin

Grade Reading Level: Kindergarten on up

Mouse's Wood invites little readers into a beautifully illustrated woodland world filled with die cut flaps and creative homes of different animals. We see the seasons change through beautifully illustrated pages and intricate artwork. It's the perfect book for children who love getting lost in the details of an imaginary world and my girls favorite part of the book is choosing which house they would want to live in if they were a forest animal.

Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel

Grade Reading Level: K-3

Frog and Toad are best friends who share all the little adventures of everyday life. From waiting for spring to baking cookies and taking walks, these gentle stories celebrate the best kind of friendship. These stories are funny and heart warming and a favorite in our home!

Evie and the Strawberry Patch Rescue by Hannah E. Harrison

Grade Reading Level: Pre-K and up

Evie loves spending time in her grandmother's strawberry patch, but when the garden is in trouble, she sets out to help save it. With a sweet story, adorable garden creatures, and plenty of strawberry-filled charm, this is a lovely book for little nature lovers and budding gardeners.

Grade Reading Level: 2-5
