This homemade hot chocolate mix recipe comes together in less than 5 minutes and make a great homemade gift for the holidays!

In the winter we drink A LOT of hot chocolate. We have hot chocolate game nights, movie nights, and really any time my kids are cold they will ask for a cup of cocoa.
I knew I wanted to make my own homemade hot cocoa mix this year and I love knowing all the ingredients in this homemade mix. A lot of times the store bought mixes are filled with preservatives and ingredients I don’t enjoy, so this has made me feel so much better about the amount of hot chocolate we consume 🙂
I also love how easy it is to prepare and I just need to add the mix to a cup of hot water and top with some marshmallows or a candy cane for a cozy winter treat.

This big batch of hot cocoa mix is a great homemade staple in the winter time and lasts us many months!
We also love to make a batch of the hot chocolate mix to put in mason jars and give as gifts to friends and neighbors. Find a cute mug, add some candy canes or mini marshmallows with a small bag of the hot cocoa mix and it makes a perfect homemade gift for Christmas!
My husband and I tried so many different versions of this mix and we know you will love this recipe. It is the perfect balance of rich chocolate and sweetness and makes a delicious cup of hot chocolate!
Ingredients
- Whole milk powder – You can also use non-fat milk powder, however the cocoa may be less creamy
- Granulated sugar
- Powdered sugar
- Dutch processed cocoa – You can find this in most grocery stores! I highly recommend using dutch processed cocoa over regular cocoa because it has a rich chocolate flavor and has a less acidic aftertaste compared to regular unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Salt

How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
Add all the ingredients to a large bowl and mix together.

If desired you can put the mix in a food processor to remove any clumps and make a finer powder. You can also use a sifter to do this same thing!
My daughter didn’t know what a sifter was, so we used this method so she could try it out 🙂

Add 3 tablespoons to a cup of hot water and enjoy!
You can store the hot cocoa mix in an airtight container for up to a year.

We love making this so we have it on hand during cozy winter days!
Could you leave the whole milk powder out and then just add milk to your cup of hot cocoa when making it? Or does it need to be in powder form? Thank you for the recipe.
I have never tried it this way so I am not sure! You could always make the recipe leaving the whole milk powder out and try it and if it doesn’t work just add it in? If you try it this way please report back and let us know how it goes 🙂
This recipe is delicious. I made several batches and put them in containers to give to friends this holiday season.
