If you are looking for a budget friendly sensory activity with items you already have at home, this colorful bubble foam is for you!  It is so easy to whip together and kept my toddler and preschooler busy for the whole morning!

We are on a bubble kick over here and have been enjoying doing all the fun bubble activities including bouncing bubbles, making rainbow bubble snakes and painting with bubbles!

I was excited to give this rainbow bubble foam activity a try and it was a huge hit with my kiddos and myself!  I loved how easy it was to make, didn’t require any special ingredients and clean up was as easy as hosing down the buckets we used when we were finished!

It’s such a versatile sensory activity and you can create different colors for different themed sensory bins and get creative with how you use it.

We’ve made it twice so far this spring and one time took it outside to the mud kitchen and my daughter made magical lilac “cupcakes”.

The other time we made all the colors of the rainbow and put some little dinosaurs in it for some fun imaginative play.

In a large bowl combine 1 tablespoon soap, 1/4 cup water and a few drops of food coloring or liquid watercolors.

Sensory Play Tips & Ideas

Encourage your child to squish, scoop, pour and explore the foam and the way its texture changes after being played with.

Mix two complimentary colors for a fun color mixing activity.  We used blue and pink the first time and all of my daughters mud kitchen creations were a beautiful purple!

We used bubble bath for our bubbles, because I wasn’t sure how covered my kids would want to get when playing and it’s more gentle on their skin as well as tear free in case any gets in their eyes!

Play outside or inside, just use a towel underneath your bin to catch splashes if you use it inside or use it in the bath tub!

The bubbles will start to fall after a while, so use it right after you make it and know it is one time use.

We used food coloring and didn’t have any issues with staining.  If you’re worried about stains stick with the liquid watercolors since they are washable!

  1. You can enjoy a similar sensory experience using inexpensive shaving cream and a drop or two of food coloring. We like to do this on metal baking sheets and draw with our “magic finger” and erase with our “magic hand”. It’s a fun way to practice forming letters and numbers and even spelling for older kids!
