This Christmas scavenger hunt activity is such a fun Christmas activity for the entire family. It is easy to play and a great way to have some holiday fun together!
We have created 2 versions of this game, one that can be played indoors with item cards that you can place strategically throughout your classroom or home.
The other version is more of a classic scavenger hunt done outdoors (it is best done at night when Christmas inflatables and lights are up). We even created visual prompts on the scavenger hunt card for younger children who are not yet reading!
This game would be a fun activity for a Christmas party or as a post Christmas meal activity after your family celebration. It also would be a great way to pass some time when kids are off of school over Christmas break (because we know that they can only watch so many Christmas movies before they need to get some energy out!). We love the quality time we get to spend together when playing this game!

How To Play This As An Outdoor Scavenger Hunt
After a fun Christmas celebration and opening Christmas presents we love to bundle up and go outside for a little walk. It is a great way to get some of the wiggles out with our kids being inside most of the day!
A few years ago we introduced a scavenger hunt to our walk and have never looked back. It is such a fun Christmas tradition, even the older kids (and adults) get into this game!
Here’s how it works:
- Give everyone a Christmas scavenger hunt printable list, writing utensil and clipboard
- You can either all work together to complete the scavenger hunt or split into 2 teams competing against one another for a little friendly competition
- Set a time limit if you are splitting into teams so that everyone is back at a meeting spot at the same time
- Go have fun seeking out your scavenger hunt items
- Once you have met back at your meeting spot, if you were playing in teams, collect each team’s list and add up how many items each team found
- Declare a winner- it is really fun to have a special surprise or small gift for the winner (I highly suggest this be a warm cup of hot cocoa, here is an awesome homemade hot cocoa recipe)
How To Play This As An Indoor Holiday Scavenger Hunt
- โPrint off a scavenger hunt card for each person as well as the item cards
- While everyone is out of the room hide the item cards around the room or other common space
- โStart the scavenger hunt, having each person cross off the items they find (without alerting the other players)
- You can either play until everyone has found every item or you can set a time limit and see how many items the child can find within a set period of time
- โThis is a fun individual game, but is also a really great partner game! You could even work as a whole family or class to see if you can work together to find all of the items
- It is fun to have a fun prize or Christmas treat after you have completed the scavenger hunt

If you plan on doing this multiple times or want to reuse next year I recommend laminating the item cards, or printing them off on cardstock. You could even laminate the scavenger hunt pages and use a dry erase marker to mark off each item so you can reuse the page year after year!
