If you are looking for a fun Earth Day craft this coffee filter Earth craft is so simple and great for kids of all ages! It uses simple craft supplies and only takes 10-15 minutes to create (plus drying time), making it a great pick for craft for at home or in the classroom.

My 6-year-old and I recently found ourselves with an unexpected day at home, and he asked if we could make something with coffee filters. With Earth Day around the corner, and all the supplies already in our craft bin, this felt like the perfect craft to try together.
What I love most about this simple project is how naturally it opened the door to conversations about geography and caring for our planet while we created our suncatchers. Earth Day is such a great opportunity to remind kids how amazing our world is and how important it is to take care of it.
We have also loved these coloring sheets (they were a great no-prep activity and would be perfect to do while waiting for your coffee filter Earth to dry) and I created this Earth Day word scramble for a little more of a challenge for my 10 year old. You could even make wildflower seed paper to plant in your garden!
Why We Love This Earth Day Craft
- It is a great way to combine art, geography and science (here are some fun facts about the Earth to talk about when you are creating your coffee filter Earth)
- It works for kids of all ages- toddlers & preschoolers can draw their own version of the Earth and older kids can put more detail into their drawings using a globe to help guide them
- It is a great way to build hand strength and fine motor skills between the coloring and spraying
- It is a fun way to decorate for Earth Day (these would be so cute on a class bulletin board!)

Supplies Needed
- Coffee filter
- Green & blue washable markers
- Paper plate
- Spray bottle with water
- Optional: Paper towel, cookie rack or piece of black construction paper for drying and displaying
How To Make This Coffee Filter Earth Craft
Step 1: Draw the continents on the coffee filter with green markers

Step 2: Color in the ocean with blue marker

Step 3: Place the coffee filter on a paper plate or other surface that can get wet and use the spray bottle to get the entire coffee filter wet & watch the marker spread like watercolors

Step 4: Put the coffee filter on a rack with a paper towel or parchment paper underneath and let dry completely

Tips for Success
Make sure to use washable markers, permanent markers don’t allow for the ink to spread as well
Try to not oversaturate the coffee filter with too much water, if your child does get excited and spray a lot of water on it that’s okay- it will just take longer to dry (I may know this from experience :))- you could also use eye droppers to help control how much water is added to the coffee filter
If you are doing this with older kids challenge them to put more detail on their coffee filter and really think about shapes of continents
This coffee filter Earth craft is such a simple Earth day craft for kids. If you make this with your child we would love for you to share it with us on Instagram!
