Free Printable Earth Day Writing Activity For Kids
This Earth Day writing activity is a great way to get kids thinking about how they can help protect our planet while practicing their writing skills and tapping into their creativity. It’s an engaging, hands-on way to celebrate Earth Day with kids.

Earth Day is an annual holiday that falls on April 22nd and is a holiday we love to celebrate in our family. The focus of Earth day is to promote awareness of how we can better care for our world around us.
When my kids were little we did simple Earth Day activities like this Earth Day hat and recycled toilet paper roll binoculars. However as my kids are getting older I’m finding it more important for them to be aware of environmental issues and really think about how they can make small changes to help protect mother nature. That is why we created this Earth Day word scramble and this writing activity.
This writing prompt worksheet is a great opportunity to get your child to use critical thinking about how they can make small, daily changes to create a better world around them. It could mean using less water when showering, or turning off their lights when they leave their room. It is always nice to think of some simple, tangible ways that kids can start being better stewards of our world.
About This Earth Day Writing Activity
This free printable activity has two sections. The first section is a blank box for the child to draw ideas on how they can take care of the Earth. I love using this section to tap into students’ creativity.
The second section has text lines with a writing prompt of “I can care for the Earth by…”. In this section I would challenge your child to think creatively about ways they can care for our planet. They could write a persuasive essay on important issues surrounding Earth Day and I would encourage them to think of specific examples of things they can do to make the Earth a better place.
This activity is perfect for kids of all ages. For younger kids challenge them to write a few sentences and for older kids you can have them write a longer narrative with the fun writing prompts below. You could even adapt it and them them write a short story or poem.
Journal Prompts
If you child is struggling to complete the writing section it may be helpful to give them some additional Earth Day writing prompts.
Here are some additional creative writing prompts:
- If I were in charge of helping the Earth, the first thing I would do is…
- My favorite thing about nature is…
- Three things I can do to take care of our planet are…
- Why is it important to reduce, reuse, and recycle?
- If the Earth could talk, what would it say to us?
Tips For Using This Writing Worksheet
If you are doing this in a classroom it is fun to hang up everyone’s finished worksheet on bulletin boards so that students can see other ideas on how to care for the planet.
You could compile all the pictures and writing prompts into a class book.
The only supplies needed are markers and a writing utensil.
For an additional activity you could make these broken crayon sun catchers and talk about the importance of reusing and recycling items.
