The winter months can feel really long so it is fun to find some simple crafts to not only pass time but also brighten up our windows. We loved making these magic salt and watercolor snowflake paintings and doing this snow painting activity with our watercolors. We wanted to find another activity we could do with the watercolors we had on hand and these coffee filter snowflakes were a perfect fit!
There are so many coffee filter crafts but this has been one of my favorite to date. They were so easy to make and my kids loved mixing colors and seeing the final snowflake patterns after unfolding them. Between the painting and cutting this craft is a great way to work on fine motor skills too.
I love taking the opportunity during this craft to talk about real snowflakes and how each snowflake is unique. This gives kids the reassurance that there is no right or wrong way to do this craft and each snowflake is beautiful in it’s own way. That is the beauty of process art!
Materials
- Liquid watercolor paints
- Coffee filters
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Paper towels
- Cookie sheet (optional)
How To Make Your Coffee Filter Snowflakes
Prepare your liquid watercolor pants- you can do a 1:1 ratio of water to your watercolor paint or if you want lighter colors you can add a little more water, if you are wanting brighter colors then add a little less water to this ratio
Set out a few paper towels and set them aside until you are done painting
Lay your coffee filters flat on a paper plate or cookie sheet- we found it easiest to do 2 coffee filters at one time to help with the absorption of the watercolor paint
Paint your coffee filters- it is okay if you leave some white space on the coffee filter but I recommend covering most of it
Set the painted coffee filters on a paper towel to dry
Once the coffee filter is completely dry create your snowflake- this site has a great tutorial on how to cut out awesome snowflake patterns. We often will just fold the coffee filter in half or quarters and cut out random sections creating very unique snowflakes. Sometimes younger children need some help with this step.
Unfold your coffee filter, smooth out your fold lines and enjoy!
Ideas On How To Use Your Snowflakes
Tape to a window to create beautiful sun catchers
Tie a string to the snowflake and hang it from a ceiling, my son loves to put his above his bed at Christmas time to make it feel like a winter wonderland
Wrap Christmas presents with kraft brown wrapping paper and use the snowflakes to decorate the present
Replace the coffee filter with white cupcake liners and you can create little snowflake ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree
