Key Ingredients

eggs, vinegar, salt, sugar and mini chocolate chips sitting on the counter
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • Pinch of salt

How to Make Resurrection Cookies

Step one: Preheat oven to 300°F.

Step Two: Place the mini chocolate chips in a plastic ziplock bag and crush with a wooden spoon. If your children are little, you can just talk about the small chocolate chips representing how Jesus’ body was broken for us. Read John 19:1-3

Step Three: Smell the vinegar (and taste if you would like), then add it to a mixing bowl. This step represents the vinegar Jesus was given on the cross when he was thirsty and the bitterness of our sin. Read John 19:28-30

Step Four: Add salt to the bowl. Place a few grains in your child’s hand and let them taste it. This step represents the tears shed by Jesus’ followers. Read Luke 23:27

Step Five: Taste the sugar and then add sugar to the bowl. This represents the sweetest part of the story: Jesus died because He loves us. Read John 3:16

Step Six: Add egg whites to the bowl and beat until stiff peaks form. The white color represents our sins being washed clean by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18

Step Seven: Fold in chocolate chips and drop mounds onto the parchment paper. Each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was placed. Read Matthew 27:59-60

Step Eight: Turn the oven off and then place the cookies in the oven and let your kids seal it with tape to represent the sealed tomb. Talk about how it feels to leave them overnight, just like Jesus’ followers were sad to leave him. Read Matthew 27:65-66

Step Nine: Open the oven in the morning and use a knife to cut open a cookie. The cookie is hollow, just as the first Easter morning revealed the empty tomb. He is risen! Read Matthew 28:1-9
