Valentine’s Day is a welcomed holiday in our house. It is always a great pick me up at the end of winter and is a holiday we all look forward to. My preschooler asked to do a craft the other day and these heart suncatchers were so fun to make together and we had all the supplies at home already! I always have a stash of coffee filters in my craft bin because we love coffee filter crafts!
This craft was a great way to work on fine motor skills with my preschooler. The coloring, cutting and using the eye dropper were all great activities to build his hand strength and work on these pre-school readiness skills.
If you are making these suncatchers with older kids it is fun for them to create designs on their heart and watch the colors mix and change as the water was added. Before you add the water have your child guess what colors will mix to create new colors. Once we added water to our hearts it was almost like they turned into tie-dye suncatchers which was so fun to watch!
I have to say, these suncatchers are such a welcome sight in our house. The morning sun makes the colors look so vibrant and my child loves to see his creations hanging up. This was a great project to celebrate Valentine’s Day, however, I think we will keep our hearts up a bit longer because they are so cheerful!
Materials
- Washable markers
- White coffee filters
- Eye dropper
- Water
- Art tray or paper plate
- Scissors
How To Make Your Coffee Filter Hearts
Take your coffee filter and color it with your washable markers
Once your coffee filter is colored fold it in half
Draw a half heart outline on one side with a color that you have used on your coffee filter
Cut out the outline and open to reveal a heart shape
Place the heart on a paper plate or art tray
Use an eye dropper to drop water onto your suncatcher, make sure the entire coffee filter is saturated
You can either dry on a clean plate, tray or we used a cookie rack which worked perfectly!
Once it is dry (it takes about 20 minutes) you can hang on your window for some fun Valentine’s decorations
